Cooking rice can be tricky, we all know that.
Overcook it and it turns to mush, undercook it and it’ll be hard, then there’s the issue of it being under-seasoned.
Well now, a chef has revealed how to make perfect rice every single time – and it’s much easier than you think.
Poppy O’Toole regularly shares handy tips, tricks and recipes on TikTok where she’s known as @poppycooks , like how to brown your butter and chop shallots like a pro – but it’s her rice hack that’s got people talking.
She said: “This is the way I like to cook rice – there are loads of different methods but this is the way an old colleague of mine, Evelyn, showed me.”
In a video that has been viewed more than 220,000 times, Poppy explains that the secret to perfect rice is to use the “golden ratio” which uses volume to measure both rice and water.
The golden ratio, according to the chef, is one cup of rice to one and a half cups of water.
Poppy starts by washing her rice, before letting it boil for three minutes.
When the time is up, take the saucepan off the heat, cover with a lid and leave for 12 minutes.
“Then you have beautifully cooked fluffy rice,” she concluded.
Since being posted, the video has racked up more than 23,000 likes and almost 400 comments from keen foodies.
One person said: “This might actually help me because I cannot cook rice for the life of me.”
Another commented: “Exactly my method. I never knew anyone who did it the same way because I devised it myself.”
Whilst someone else joked: “Step one, rip the corner off Uncle Bens, step two, put in microwave for two minutes, step three, eat.”
Poppy also asked viewers to share how they cook rice, which varied from ‘cooking it like pasta and draining it’ to using frozen rice – but the most popular method was to use a rice cooker.
